The 2024 report on International Migration, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) analyses migration data from each member country, according to data from the respective national authorities.

In France, among the population born abroad (8.9 million), Portugal is third (600,000 - 7%), behind only Algeria (16%) and Morocco (12%), corresponding in 2022 to the fifth country.

And if the data on the foreign population in France is analysed by nationality, Portugal rose to second place in 2023, with 550,000 people who maintain Portuguese nationality in French territory, behind only Algeria.

Between 2014 and 2022, the average number of Portuguese who chose France as an emigration destination ranged between almost 19 thousand and six thousand.

Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, which has more than half of its population born in another country, Portugal remains in first place, with 22% of the total number of people born abroad (72.4 thousand), and even among newcomers in 2022, the Portuguese (12%) were only behind the Ukrainians, a country at war due to the invasion by Russia.

The absolute number of immigrants in Luxembourg with Portuguese nationality rises to 92 thousand, accounting for the second generation, while Cape Verde occupies sixth place on this list, with 8.7 thousand people.

With regard to requests for Luxembourg nationality, Portugal came in second place, with 1,227 processes, after Brazil (3,275) and above Cape Verde (8th with 186 requests).

Switzerland

Another OECD country in which the Portuguese presence is evident is Switzerland. Among citizens residing in the country and born abroad, Portugal occupied third place in 2023 (203.8 thousand people), maintaining the same place if the accounting is focused on nationality (257.8 thousand).

With regard to applications for Swiss nationality, Portugal came in fifth place in 2022, with 2,228 processes, after countries such as Kosovo, Germany or Italy.

However, in Switzerland, there was a decline in the annual arrival of Portuguese, from 18,600 in 2012 to 9,600 in 2022.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, Portugal is in 13th place as the country of origin of British citizens born abroad (170 thousand in 2021), a number that rises to sixth place when accounting for foreign nationality (268 thousand in 2021).

In Belgium, almost four thousand Portuguese entered in 2022, a value similar to 2012, remaining stable, and Portugal was in ninth place in 2023 in the 'ranking' of foreign nationalities in the country (53.3 thousand).

In the Netherlands, the number of Portuguese who chose the country annually has increased, from 2.3 thousand in 2014 to 5.7 thousand in 2022, and is currently the 15th foreign nationality, with 31.2 thousand people.

Canada is another of the OECD countries in which the Portuguese community is relevant, occupying 14th place in 2021, with a total of 128.8 thousand people born in Portugal.

In the smallest OECD country, Iceland, Portugal is in 15th place in the ranking of residents born abroad (around 1,300 in 2023), a place that rises to 8th place if the assessment is made by nationality (around 1,700 citizens ).

In 2022, Portugal was even the seventh foreign country supplying labor to Iceland.

The United States is one of the OECD member countries that is a traditional destination for Portuguese emigration, but, considering its size, Portugal is left out of the top 15 countries in each of the categories analyzed by the OECD.
