The inauguration of Lisbon's Christmas lighting will be marked in the Terreiro do Paço, along with the Christmas tree at 6:30 pm, followed by a light and sound show and a concert by the singer Áurea, who will sing songs from Christmas films, as indicated the municipality of Lisbon.

In 2023, the Christmas lights in Lisbon were inaugurated on 30 November, a week later compared to what was planned for this year.

In response to the Lusa agency, the Lisbon City Council (CML) said that the investment in Christmas lighting for this year is 749,500 euros, the same amount that was made available in 2023, under a protocol between the municipality and the Union of Trade and Services Associations (UACS).

"It should be noted the measures that have been adopted to reduce consumption and energy efficiency: Lisbon will be illuminated with 1,987,125 low-consumption lighting, using LED technology, which will allow energy savings of about 80% compared to traditional incandescent lamps," said the municipality.

Under the protocol with UACS, the urban area to be illuminated will also be the same as the previous year, with Christmas lights expected in 45 locations, including squares, streets and avenues of the city.

"In all, about 1,000 luminous structures will be installed, composed of approximately 5,700 decorative pieces," said the chamber.

In addition to the concern with energy savings, CML highlighted that in this year's Christmas lighting "more sustainable materials will be used, such as biodegradable and recyclable plastics, thus minimising waste generation".

"The facilities will be recycled at the end of their useful life, contributing to a circular economy and to the reduction of the environmental impact associated with production and disposal," the municipality stressed.

According to the municipality, the Christmas lights hours are from 17:30 to 24:00 on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; from 17:30 to 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; and from 17:30 to 02:00 on Christmas Day and on New Year's Eve.
