According to Jornal Económico, a new report from air passenger compensation specialist AirHelp has revealed data on air traffic in Portugal and airport performance in the first quarter of 2025. During the first three months of the year, more than six million passengers boarded flights from Portuguese airports, with almost 70% of journeys taking place on schedule.
However, around two million passengers have faced disruption to their flights. While most cases have involved minor delays, around 114,000 people are eligible for compensation due to delays of more than three hours, cancellations or missed connections resulting from previous flights.
Compared to the same period last year, there was a reduction in the number of flights and passengers. In the first three months of 2025, approximately 47,000 flights were recorded, a decrease of 2% compared to 2024, and the number of passengers decreased by 4%.
Despite this decrease, the rate of disruptions increased by 13% compared to the previous year, with the number of passengers eligible for compensation increasing by 48%, from 75,000 in 2024 to almost 113,000 in 2025, due to an increase in the number of flights with delays exceeding three hours.
TAP Portugal stood out as the airline that transported the most passengers, with more than two million. Of this total, around 62% faced no disruption, while 38% suffered some type of delay, resulting in more than 41 thousand passengers eligible for compensation.
Ryanair came in second, carrying more than a million passengers, with 26% of flights experiencing disruption and just over seven thousand passengers eligible for compensation.
Among airports, Faro Airport performed best, with 84.5% of flights experiencing no disruptions. Porto Airport followed with 80%, resulting in 80.2% of passengers experiencing smooth flights. On the other hand, Lisbon Airport continued to be the most affected, with 40% of flights experiencing delays or cancellations, resulting in 39.5% of passengers experiencing disruptions.
The artificial congestion by TAP at Lisbon airport maintains their share or even increases it while it is already decreasing the overall number pf tourists arriving in Portugal.
