The objective of the protocol, signed by the Madeira Friends association and the region's Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (ICNF), is to mitigate the effects of climate change and promote carbon sequestration.

The project includes activities such as bush clearing, planting indigenous species, irrigation and maintenance of the area for a minimum period of five years, in addition to awareness raising and promotion of good environmental practices.

The ICNF is responsible for collaborating with Madeira Friends and developing joint awareness-raising actions, while the association has to carry out reforestation and guarantee, “for a period of no less than five years, the carrying out of silvicultural operations”.

The project costs are fully financed by the association.
