The initiative mobilised around 220 volunteers, including more than 180 students and 21 teachers from school groups in the municipality of Olhão, as well as students from the University of Algarve volunteer group (UALG V+), in a demonstration of how education and civic involvement can help the environment.
The operation was divided between a land-based clean-up and an aquatic component, the latter conducted by a team of CCMAR divers, with logistical support from the Portuguese Navy – Southern Maritime Department and Nature Watchers from the ICNF.

“More than just a one-off action, Operação Praia Limpa represents a true movement in defense of our natural heritage. Each bag of trash collected is a warning sign, but also a sign of hope. The impact is real, measurable, and above all, inspiring. We are proud to lead this mission that combines awareness, science, and citizenship,” says Hugo Brites, Zoomarine’s Marketing and Communications Director.
Dr. Ricardo Calé, Vice-Mayor of Olhão, also highlighted that “this Operation is a real example of how joint work between entities, schools and volunteers can have a concrete impact on the protection of our ecosystems. With each edition, we renew our commitment to a cleaner, more conscious and more sustainable Algarve”.

Since its start in 2017, Operation Clean Beach has already collected more than 8.34 tons of marine litter on Algarve beaches.
