In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, UNAC revealed that the Figueira da Australia is located in Jardins da Quinta das Lágrimas, "where every year it is visited by thousands of people".

The competition that chose the Tree of the Year 2025 recorded 17,321 votes, distributed among the ten candidate national trees, which included olive trees, cork oaks, holm oaks, oaks and cedars.

In second place in the competition was Oliveira do Mouchão (in Mouriscas, Abrantes, district of Santarém), with 2,470 votes, and, in third, Sobreiro Centenário (in Abela, Setúbal), with 2,342 votes.

"Figueira dos Amores will now represent Portugal in the European 'Tree of the Year' competition, whose voting will take place 'online', at the beginning of 2025", he said.

The history of the winning tree "dates back to the 19th century, having been planted on this property by an aristocratic tree collector, following seed exchanges with the Sydney Botanic Gardens", he said.

It can be found in the garden, next to the Fonte dos Amores, the scene of the legendary love of King Dom Pedro of Portugal and Dona Inês de Castro, "where it enchants visitors by the size and beauty of its branches, trunk and roots".
