The data is contained in the traffic accident report released by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) during the presentation of the Christmas and New Year 2024/2025 “Safe Parties” campaign.
According to the report, available on the ANSR website and which brings together daily data, between January 1st and December 15th, there were 134,914 road accidents, with 453 people dying, 2,550 seriously injured and 41,419 suffering minor injuries.
Compared to the same period in 2023, there were 2,939 more disasters on the roads, six fewer deaths, 14 more serious injuries and 306 more minor injuries.
The report also makes a comparison with 2019, a reference year for monitoring the targets for reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries by 2030 set by the European Commission and Portugal, a year in which 134,692 accidents occurred (216 more), 502 deaths ( minus 49), 2,434 serious injuries (plus 116) and 43,149 minor injuries (minus 1,730).
According to ANSR, the districts with the highest number of accidents are Lisbon (23,328), Porto (22,727), Aveiro (10,518), Braga (10,248) and Faro (10,094), while the fatal victims were in greater numbers in the districts of Lisbon ( 54), Porto (54) and Braga (39).
These data concern fatal victims whose death was declared at the scene of the accident or on the way to the hospital.
ANSR also indicates that the national average, between 2018 and 2024, is 446 deaths and 2,315 serious injuries per year.
