The initiative began when members of the Parents Association approached Bill Browne, the current President of AIRC, to collaborate on identifying and supporting elderly individuals facing hardship. Working closely with the local organization Associação Social e Cultural de Almancil (ASCA), they identified 109 elderly individuals residing in two care homes, as well as several others who attend ASCA’s Day Care Center or receive meals there.
On 14th December 2024, the Nobel School students, with the assistance of the ASCA van, distributed shoeboxes filled with presents to these elderly individuals. The deliveries were marked by the harmonious sounds of carols sung in both Portuguese and English, creating a festive atmosphere that transcended language barriers.
This collaborative effort exemplifies the Rotary Club’s commitment to community service and the power of collective action. By involving young students in the process, the project not only provided much-needed support to the elderly but also instilled values of empathy and social responsibility in the younger generation.
The success of this project highlights the importance of community partnerships in addressing social challenges. By coming together, AIRC, Nobel International School, and ASCA have made a meaningful impact on the lives of Almancil’s elderly residents, ensuring they feel valued and remembered during the holiday season.
This initiative is a testament to the Rotary Club’s motto, “Service Above Self,” and reflects the organization’s ongoing dedication to making a positive difference in the community.
