The Portimão circuit hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021, but there is bad news: Portuguese fans will be unlikely to watch Formula 1 live at home again in the coming years.

Speaking to Lusa, the president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) dashed the aspirations of those who would like to have F1 back on national soil.

"Portugal is an excellent place, it already has other championships. In Formula 1 there is a limited number of places," began Mohammed ben Sulayem.

"We discussed the regulations side and the commercial side. I always try to balance the sporting side with the commercial side. I think F1 should never leave Europe because it was in Europe where it started and that's where the innovation still is. But that doesn't stop us from going to other regions”.
