The swim, which Mario dedicates to his late sister Teresa, aims to raise €20,000 for breast cancer charities in Portugal and South Africa.

The Algarve Oncology Association (AOA) and South Africa’s Pink Drive will benefit from the funds raised, helping to provide essential services for women battling breast cancer. The AOA is currently building a residence for women from rural areas who need treatment in Faro, while the Pink Drive raises funds for mobile mammogram units to reach underserved communities.

“This swim is about more than just me; it’s about making a difference for women like Teresa,” Mario says. Teresa, who passed away in 2020, was diagnosed with breast cancer at 49 and dedicated her final years to raising awareness through the Pink Drive. Although Teresa and Mario had planned to complete the Robben Island swim together, her health deteriorated before the event, and she passed away months later.

Mario, now training four times a week with a professional team, is determined to complete the swim they had planned together. “I think about her every time I get into the water. It’s like she’s right there with me, cheering me on,” he shares.

Breast cancer affects countless families worldwide, and early detection remains critical to improving outcomes. Through this swim, Mario hopes to inspire communities to take action, support lifesaving initiatives, and contribute to global awareness.
