The districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga have been under a red warning since around 1 am and until 12 pm today due to rough seas, with waves forecast from the northwest measuring 7 to 8 meters, and reaching up to 14 metres.
These seven districts are again under red warning due to a strong swell from 6pm on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday.
The IPMA also issued a red warning due to the state of the sea for the districts of Faro, Setúbal and Beja between 3am and 6am on Thursday.
Due to rough seas, the maritime bars of Caminha, Viana do Castelo, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Douro, Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, Nazaré, Peniche, Ericeira, Cascais and Portimão are closed to all navigation, according to the National Maritime Authority.
The maritime bars of Viana do Castelo and Leixões are closed to vessels with a length of less than 30 and 35 meters, respectively.
The IPMA also issued an orange warning for the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo and Braga due to strong winds with gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour, especially on the coastal strip on Wednesday, then changing to yellow on Wednesday and Thursday.
The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Braga will also be under yellow warning on Wednesday due to sometimes heavy rain.
The IPMA also placed Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Braga and Castelo Branco under a yellow warning until 12 pm today due to snowfall above 700 metres.
The red warning is issued by IPMA in cases of extremely risky meteorological situations. The orange warning indicates a moderate to high-risk meteorological situation and the yellow warning indicates a risk for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
The Institute predicts heavy rainfall in the north and center from Wednesday morning and wind gusts of between 80 and 100 kilometres per hour on the west coast and highlands due to the passage of depression IVA.
