Data sent to Lusa shows that the drop in violent and serious crime in 2024 “is more pronounced” in the municipality of Lisbon than in the rest of the area under Cometlis’ responsibility.
The Cometlis area includes the entire municipalities of Lisbon, Amadora, Oeiras and Odivelas and the urban areas of the municipalities of Cascais, Loures, Sintra, Torres Vedras and Vila Franca de Xira.
According to the PSP, general crime in the Cometlis area fell 8.9% last year compared to 2023, while in the municipality of Lisbon, it fell 12.6%.
Violent and serious crime recorded in the area covered by Cometlis fell by 1.4% and in the municipality of Lisbon by 10.41%.
Diário de Noticias reports that crime in the municipality of Lisbon has seen its second-biggest drop in 10 years, having only been surpassed in 2020 and 2021, the years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
On November 20, at the ceremony commemorating the 157th anniversary of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, the Cometlis commander had already stated that the crime statistics “do not correspond to the feeling of insecurity” spread in public opinion, adding that in this region violent crimes had stagnated.
“The statistical data on registered crime do not correspond to the feeling of insecurity spread on social media and in certain sectors of public opinion,” said Luis Elias at the time.
Cometlis is the largest PSP command in the country, where around 6,800 police officers provide services and guarantee the security of around 2.5 million citizens every day.
