The project to create the Regulation of the Municipal Tourist Tax of Nazaré, in the district of Leiria, stipulates the application of a tourist tax in the amount of one euro per night for a stay in all tourist accommodation units in the municipality, including hotels, hostels, accommodation local and other forms of accommodation.

The fee will be applied to those over 16 years of age and for a maximum of five days, according to the regulatory proposal under public discussion for 30 working days.

In the document, the council justifies the implementation of the tax with the aim of ensuring that tourism “contributes directly and in a balanced way to sustainability and quality of life” in the village, which has around 15,000 inhabitants and receives “hundreds of thousands of tourists” annually.

The increase in tourism, “although essential for economic development, results in an overload of infrastructure, public services and the environment”.

According to the council, the revenue from the tourist tax will be applied to “priority areas”, with part of the amount directed to supporting the development of affordable housing through a housing cooperative project to be located in a municipal eucalyptus grove.

The funds will also be used to improve the road network, preserve cultural and natural heritage, strengthen public transport, sanitation and urban cleaning services, support cultural events and create the Citizen Card, which will offer “benefits and discounts for residents, such as an annual number of free trips on municipal public transport”, according to the city hall’s proposal.

Another part of the revenue will be allocated to awareness campaigns and the creation of sustainability programs and investment in Green Infrastructure, such as green mobility and the transition to sustainable energy.
