The event, organised by the Algarve Anti-Discrimination Front - FADA, comes as a "response to the call by an extremist group for an anti-immigration demonstration on the same day", explains the organisation in a press release and reported by regiao-sul.pt.

"There is no evidence to support a relationship between increased crime and immigration in Albufeira or anywhere else in the country. The Algarve has always been a region characterised by its cultural diversity, both at a tourist and work level.

“The real problem in the region is the increase in social inequalities, which affect the entire population, regardless of their origin. The Algarve is the region with the greatest inequality in mainland Portugal, a result of decades of policies that favoured an unsustainable tourism model to the detriment of investment in essential public services", says the text.

According to FADA, the Algarve's structural problems include "lack of access to quality health and education services, a serious housing crisis and widespread job insecurity".

"These problems have nothing to do with working class communities of migrants, who, on the contrary, are significant contributors to Social Security and Algarve tourism”.

This peaceful demonstration on February 8th aims to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Algarve, promote unity in solving the region's real problems and fight for equitable rights for all residents.
