ABC has as its main mission to create, and transmit a culture of research and development, contributing to the training of highly qualified and differentiated professionals and improving healthcare quality.
Since 2019, ABC’s Research and Training Medical Emergency Department brought together medical doctors and researchers trained in the best institutions in the world, from Canada and US to Germany, UK and Portugal, aiming to bring worldwide experience to the region.
These specialists have already developed several structures in the region for research, health skills training for professionals and citizens, and support for healthcare. They have been bringing the link between scientific knowledge and clinical practice even closer, collaborating closely with a wide variety of public and private organisations.
In 2019, ABC’s Emergency Department developed an innovative project called “Algarve Coração Seguro” - Algarve Safe Heart. Since then, this program has been training more than 4.000 citizens in Basic Life Support in the region. Are you one of them? If not, find how to become one on our website.
Simultaneously, the project already placed around 100 automatic defibrillators, covering urban, rural and touristic areas. This year, 60 more are on their way, making Algarve the region with the biggest number of this type of equipment in the country as well as in Europe, providing a safer environment for residents and tourists.
Aside from this, ABC is training parents and school professionals in Pediatric Life Support and Pediatric First Aid. Is your children’s school an ABC Safe school? If not, find out how you can help it become a safer place for our children on our website.
ABC’s Emergency Department training plan exhibits extremely high standards of quality and accuracy, under the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Algarve leadership, inspiring and supporting doctors, nurses and other professionals to reach a world quality medical service. Did you hear about the state-of-the-art Medical Faculty Simulation Centre?
Do you know how many out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the Algarve each year? Well, ABC has been researching and published the biggest Portuguese study ever done in a recognised medical journal. You may read more about it on our website.
The collaboration with physicians, nurses and other professionals engaged in daily clinical practice in the region forms strong, cohesive, and experienced training teams with diverse perspectives. This experience allows for a detailed understanding of the characteristics and environments of critically ill patients, both within and outside the hospital, as well as an approach to victims taking into account the specificities of the region.
Through personalised training, this team plans and designs tailored programmes for each specific group of trainees, adjusting to their individual levels of knowledge and prior training.
Did you hear about the state-of-the-art ABC’s Surgical Simulation Center and Medical Faculty Simulation Center? Similar to how a pilot uses a simulator before flying a plane full of passengers, Algarve’s physicians and nurses do these simulations in these centres.
There are already in place complete training programmes focused on patient safety. This year, with internationally recognised courses, foreign medical teams are coming to practice in these centres.
