Jenny their President has just finished a mouth-watering batch of cherry and apple jam. “We take them with us everywhere. Except for car-boot sales.” The income from Pop-up shops, events and car-boot sales are raised specifically for their SniP campaign. “Steralisation programmes are needed and they are expensive. We’re talking hundreds of feral cat colonies and privately owned moggies as well. Yes, we do doggies too.” She smiles. “We are also in the middle of Jackie’s cooking session for a lunchtime event.” Anyone who is interested can apply via the event email. “You get added to the list of luncheons and when your name comes up you get an invite.” Mmm. “This means that the same people do not get invited every time, there is always a wonderful mix of conversations new members and oldies alike.” The luncheons can range from Asian mix to Mexican American themes. There are always jams, pickles, marmalades and Jackie’s own scrummy short-bread cookies. Yum.
“Our latest recruit for the helpline is Wanda. She had quite a traumatic start! A lady in the Alentejo worked as a carer for an elderly gentleman. He suddenly passed away. His pet cross-Alsatian ‘Sabu’ left behind.” They finally managed to get the lovely 12-year-old canine to ARA’s ‘Cabanita’. General Manager João Ferreira was happy to take him on. “Fortunately a good donation was made for Sabu’s care and potential re-homing costs.” A truly happy ending. Whilst ARA’s ‘Pet-Legacy’ is just reaching it’s second year of availability there is still more campaigning to be done for its worthy cause. “Legacy for Pets is just a simple way of looking after your pets whilst they are still with you and you are alive. Unfortunately, we know only too well that our number when it is called, is unknown to us...” Quite. “So there can be quite a lot of problems and head-aches with the left-over animals. It needn’t be that way.” Legacy is simple and available to all. Make contact with ARA and get a form and any questions will be answered.
