One of the highest in Europe. The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), has already been alerted to this deadly killer virus. Jenny Clarke, their President explains.

“Unfortunately, it lays hidden in the victim for some time. When it does appear it doesn’t always show up in the blood test. Some times after repeated tests it may be diagnosed.” Worrying. “The word ‘killer’ is not one we use lightly in the animal world. But FeLV is just that.” It is easily spread amongst the cat population by contact, food, licking, all the things felines enjoy. “They are tactile creatures and very amorous, so the disease gets spread very quickly.”

Advice is to contact the vet straight away, even if you only think there are some symptoms. Vomiting, diarrhoea, hair falling out dangerous sudden loss of weight. “It is distressing, as there is not a cure, at the moment. As far as we know not spread between humans or dogs. Sadly just recovering from the parvovirus, now a newer more deadly disease to contend with especially, it is going to affect the feral cat-colonies.”

The cure is get any young cats vaccinated against the virus immediately. If there are any concerns discuss it with the vet. Straight away. Cleanliness, in the meantime, would be sensible. “Clean, around the cat’s living quarters and make sure they don’t use the same bowls. Litter trays, well, it is a mine-field.” Jenny smiles. “It is a challenge but I am sure most, if not all, cat lovers will make sure their loved ones are kept as safe as possible. And no mixing with strange outsiders!” Got it.

“Check the internet if you need more information. Unfortunately, this virus can appear and disappear and then reappear. Not an easy one!” Prevention is the only way with this kind of illness.
