The only regional slaughterhouse in the Algarve, which operated in the municipality of Loulé, was closed in July 2007 by the Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) due to failure to comply with minimum hygiene conditions.

Resolution No. 112/2025 of the Assembly of the Republic, without the force of law, resulted from the final text presented by the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee, approved by a majority in plenary on 14 March, relating to proposals from the Chega and PS parliamentary groups.

Draft resolution 176/XVI/1ª for the construction of the Algarve slaughterhouse was presented by Chega, highlighting the lack of infrastructure in the region, especially in the agricultural sector, due to the lack of a regional slaughterhouse, says the commission's text.

Draft resolution 335/XVI/1ª, from the PS, states that the creation of mobile slaughterhouses in Portugal, with a special focus on the Algarve, is a more financially accessible alternative proposal than the construction of fixed infrastructures and is in line with European regulations.

The construction of a cold storage facility in the region is seen as essential to reduce production costs in the livestock sector, improve self-sufficiency and retain the population in rural areas.

After the closure of the Algarve's infrastructure, Algarve producers were forced to resort to slaughterhouses in Beja and Setúbal to slaughter their animals.

In addition to recommending the construction of a slaughterhouse in the Algarve and the operation of mobile slaughterhouses nationwide, Parliament is asking the Government to approve the derogations provided for in Council Regulation (EC) No. 1099/2009 that exempt mobile slaughterhouses from certain requirements.

The Assembly of the Republic also recommends that the Government include in the reprogramming of the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan a financing line for mobile slaughterhouses for regions furthest from conventional slaughterhouses and/or where there is a greater number of small livestock producers.
