This is the biggest daily increase in infections since the beginning of the pandemic, surpassing the peak recorded on 31 December, when 7,627 cases were reported.

More than 70% of new infections are concentrated in the Lisbon region of Vale do Tejo and the Northern Region.

As for hospital admissions, the epidemiological bulletin reveals that 3,293 (33 more than on Tuesday) are admitted to an infirmary, of which 513 are in intensive care units, one more than on the previous day.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has already registered 7,377 deaths and 446,606 cases of infection by the new coronavirus, and today 87,004 are active, 6,821 more than on Tuesday.

The health authorities have in surveillance 100,103 contacts, 3,526 more than the previous day.

A total of 3,115 people have recovered from the disease.

Since the beginning of the epidemic in Portugal in March, 352,225 people have recovered.

Regarding the 91 deaths registered in the last 24 hours, 34 occurred in the North region, 27 in Lisbon and Tagus Valley, 15 in the Alentejo region, 14 in the Centre region and one in the Algarve.

Also according to the DGS bulletin, the North region registered the highest number of new infections by SARS-CoV-2 in the last 24 hours (3,857) followed very closely by Lisboa e Vale do Tejo with 3,333 new cases.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Northern region has registered 222,403 cases of infection and 3,346 deaths and the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region 144,842 cases and 2,563 deaths.

The Centre region also recorded the largest increase in new cases since the beginning of the pandemic. In the last 24 hours 1,932 cases have been reported. This region accounts for 53,668 cases since March and 1,076 deaths.

In Alentejo a further 439 cases have been reported, totalling 12,815 infections and 278 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic in Portugal.

The Algarve region has today reported 307 new cases, totalling 8,836 infections and 76 deaths.

Madeira has registered 52 new cases. This autonomous region accounts for 1,878 infections and 16 deaths due to covid-19.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores 107 new cases have been registered in the last 24 hours, totalling 2,164 infections and 22 deaths.

The confirmed cases are spread over all age groups, with the highest number of infections recorded being between 20 and 59 years old.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 200,798 men and 245,651 women in Portugal, according to DGS data, 157 cases of unknown sex are under investigation, as these data are not provided automatically.

Of the total number of fatalities, 3,843 were men and 3,534 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in the elderly over the age of 80, followed by people aged between 70 and 79.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,869,674 deaths as a result of more than 86.3 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a review by the French agency AFP.
