In a statement, the PJ states that the man is suspected of starting at least four forest fires that occurred in the parishes of Lobão, Gião, Louredo and Guisande, and there are also suspicions that he has been the cause several other fires in the area, an investigation is in progress.

“The fires were caused during the day using a lighter, having been set in areas along paths bordering forest settlements”, says the same note.

According to the PJ, the border area of the land where the fires were started is residential, with several houses and forest, having burned some hectares, only not spreading to a greater extent due to the rapid response by the Arrifana Fire Department.

The detainee, a retired bricklayer, with no criminal record, will have a hearing in court.
