In the general voting, in the plenary of the Assembly of the Republic, the PS was the only party to vote in favour of the budget proposal, which has abstentions from the PAN party and of the two non-registered deputies, Joacine Katar Moreira and Cristina Rodrigues.
In total, 108 deputies voted in favour, five abstained and 117 voted against.
"The result was the rejection of this Government proposal", stated the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, at the end of the vote.
Following the vote, prime minister António Costa, surrounded by all the members of the Government who took part in the parliamentary debate with him, declared to journalists, that he felt "quiet conscience" and will hold his head high.
The head of Government insisted that he would accept "without comment" any decision that the President of the Republic may now take - and everything points to the dissolution of the AR and the calling of early elections
"The Government respects the competences of the President of the Republic ", said António Costa, also assuring that the Portuguese "can count on the Government to continue to ensure governance".
Get rid of these crooks. Vote them out and hopefully people with clearer vision and less corruption may be elected.

Does not bode well for the future of Portugal. Unity is what is needed at the moment, not petty party politics.

I will be giving my vote to Iniciativa Liberal if an election is called.
The left are clearly fiscally irresponsible (dare I say illiterate) and the recent municipal elections prove that the Portuguese have lost faith in them.
Their failed projects, like the many TAP bailouts that have contributed to a massive deficit will cause great hardship for many years to come.
The Portuguese people deserve to keep more of their income, and we should value the small and medium sized enterprises that are the backbone of our economy.
We are also in a position to attract foreign investment, especially in the tech sector, and should leverage our local talent better.
Socialism is doomed to fail, and the sooner Portugal gives up on this fantasy the better for us all.
We can still ensure social welfare without so much state intervention in the free market!

In the past “Unity” has been used by PS to force parties that want to implement measures to help STRUGGLING Portuguese to shut them down. So “Unity” for the sake of the rotten-peace-syndrome is actually destructive and couter productive. The path taken has had its disastrous consequences for the ppl. Had that “unity” been steered towards a constructive path, we wouldn´t be in the predicament we are now.

Time for the socialists and communists to be kicked out.

I couldn't agree more with Quintin. Socialism is a failed and bankrupt ideology, fuelled by hatred and jealousy of the rich and successful. The left are just as bigoted as the right, but towards a different demographic segment of the population. Astonishing that the response of Socialist Costa's govt to each and every problem is more govt intervention and control. People are responsible for the outcomes in their life, and shouldn't begrudge others who, through hard work, risk taking or initiative, generate better outcomes for themselves. Liberate the people, and don't have us enslaved to the state!

Well well. Is this the beginning of the end for the socialist government? No more. Enough. CHEGA!

If the other correspondents on this article think that the current government is socialist, they need to upgrade their political education. Party labels are meaningless. If the PS lived up to its name, we would have a properly funded and staffed bealth service and a realistic minimum wage, among other things. And the Algarve would get a fair share of the available resources.
