This was an initiative of the Assistance, Development and Professional Training Foundation to create an architectural motif aimed at a union between the various religions that exist in the world.
According to Jaime Ramos, the idea came after visiting countries with different religions. Project approval took six years to complete. The building took a year to build. Jaime Ramos told The Portugal News that the inauguration of the Temple was made on 11 September 2016 as "a tribute to all victims of fundamentalism and religious wars throughout the centuries."
The Temple itself is shaped like a pyramid with a quadrilateral base with a height of 13.4 metres, to invoke the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, while it can also be related to the pyramids of Egypt. The corners of the building are oriented according to the four cardinal points: North, South, East and West. On the façades, the initials of the words Bondade (B) (kindness), Moral (M) (moral) and Verdade (V) (truth) are in capital letters.
Temple
Observatory of Religions
Inside the temple, there is an Observatory of Religions, where visitors can find chronological data on the 15 religions with the most followers in the world. Inside the Observatory, visitors can read the history of religions such as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, among others. Visitors can also enjoy an area dedicated to the history of warfare, or not, of a religious nature and dedicated to religious intolerance. The historical information contained in the Observatory was provided by the Science of Religions department at Universidade Lusófona.
The Temple aims "to promote the freedom to those who believe or not in God, tolerance and respect for others, as the basis for creating peace in the world." In the central area of the Temple, it is possible to find an area free of religious reasons to promote “spiritual reflection” so that each visitor can pray according to their faith.
The emphasis given to religions is the same as that given to atheists, as all views regarding the personal view of religion are respected and included in the Universalist Ecumenical Temple. The space is consolidated outside the temple, in a rectangular space with a chess floor that alludes to Masonic temples, which refers to a speech by Pope Benedict XVI, who called for the inclusion of atheists and agnostics in the religious debate.
Also, on the outside, there is a stone cube revolving on water, in homage to Galileo Galilei's theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun and not the other way around, as was previously believed. The play tries to explain that truths are not absolute and used Galileo's theory as an example, which eventually led to the scientist being condemned by the Inquisition more than four centuries ago. The cube is also intended to represent that religious belief cannot negatively influence science.
Ticket prices vary between €9 and €14, depending on the age of the visitor. Jaime Ramos emphasises that “the majority of workers are people with disabilities or mental illness”, so visitors have the opportunity not only to reflect the messages read in the Temple but also to support a social integration project, with the purchase of the ticket.
templo universalista
The Bahá,í Faith teaches that there is a single, omnipotent God who has revealed to mankind, through a succession of prophets and manifestations, a pathway to spiritual fulfilment of all people regardless of the trappings which have been imposed by organised religion. The Báb who heralded this faith was executed by Persian religious authorities in 1850 . His vision of the new prophet was fulfilled by Bahá,u´lláh whose teachings of universal belief have spread world-wide but, unfortunately, to mainly intellectual communities rather than the hoi polloi.
The "temple" which you feature appears to be inspired by North Americal theme park theolgy !

I find it fascinating that a this building, intended to be a center of peace for all beliefs, is strikingly modelled after the "All seeing eye" so prevalent, from US dollar bills, to the freemasons, to a particular denomination of christian churches, and all the way back to Egyptology and the Eye of Horus. Hopefully there will be some explanation as to why this structure was chosen.

They should build a temple and call it the temple of Jesus Christ. Only Jesus saves people from sin and death. Religion can not save anyone, except turn people against each other. Jesus shed his blood on a cross like a lamb, and only through Jesus can God hear your prayers. If you believe in Jesus and have faith in him you'll be saved and have eternal life. If you don't believe in Jesus and don't have faith in him, your condemned already to death. No Religion or any other name or no one else can save you, In the past they sacrificed animals to pay for the sins of people. But Jesus payed the price, so that through him we might have eternal life.

It’s great to share worldwide, collective or ecumenical values but we shouldn't forget the individual, the building block of our societies! I wonder where we will end up? Now, it's so fashionable to be everything to everybody that, I'm afraid, in the end we'll be nothing to nobody!

Tony from Other: i´m confused because you say 2 contradictory things:” . Only Jesus saves people from sin and death. Religion can not save anyone, except turn people against each other.” (Can you explain? Sorry, i´m curious.)
As s.o who was raised in a catholic context, I feel it gave me little confort or wisdom to understand and deal w/life´s challenges. I suspect that whatever wisdom pearls it had were edited out from what can be read/accessed by common ppl and all that was left was a very poor version so as to control the masses for political benefit thoughout the times. Look at confession: you do all the evils you like, and then s.o. else has to pay for your sins, and you´re cleansed so you can go and repeat? Where´s the concept of personal responsibility (for your own sins) in the middle of all this? Even protestants seem a bit better at that (personal responsibility). Note I don´t blame Jesus for this. Even as a kid I struggled to understand why a kind soul such as Jesus was thrown under the bus so everyone else would be ok. Just so ppl can go on their usual ways, w/out any sense of actual spiritual purpose. Whatever wisdom pearls I found, they had to be found elsewhere. And maybe you deem me a “heretic” for saying this. But if god knows all hearts and thoughts of ppl, he knows me well. So i´d rather have a dialogue directly to the source, bc no one else is responsible for my actions down here but me. I think a lot of ppl- not talking about you, Tony, bc I don´t know you- use catholic m.o. to keep repeating the same mistakes, WILLINGLY (unfortunately).
