The document, prepared by the Observatório da Emigração, from the research center of ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, indicates that the financial remittances from Portuguese emigration had been experiencing a growth trend, but that this trend has been in reverse since 2019.

The total amount received was €3,612 million, which represents 1.8% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

France, which led in terms of the highest value of remittances sent to Portugal, moved to second place, with Switzerland in first place, after a 4.9% increase in the volume of these remittances, which increased from €988.70 million in 2019 to €1,037 million in 2020.

Even so, France remains one of the countries with the most transfers to Portugal: €1,036.6 million in 2020, as well as the United Kingdom (379.4 million euros), Angola (245.5 million euros) and the United States (244 million euros).

Germany (€225.9 million), Spain (€111.8 million), Luxembourg (€78.4 million), Belgium (€58.9 million) and the Netherlands (€44, 5 million euros) are also included in this list of the highest amounts sent by Portuguese workers.

In global terms, there was a decrease in almost all countries, with the exception of Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Venezuela, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Last year, 90.9% of remittances originated in countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), 44.1% in the European Union and 7% in Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP).
