In a statement, the Alentejo Regional Wine Commission (CVRA) said that the region was highlighted by The New York Times as one of “52 destinations to visit by travellers who want to be part of the solution to problems such as climate change”.
“The implementation, in the region, of the Alentejo Wines Sustainability Program (PSVA) motivated the distinction in the seventh position in the published list” by the North American newspaper, said the wine commission.
Called “52 places for a changed world”, he said, the article highlights the PSVA measures for the protection of biodiversity and a reduction of around 20% in water consumption in wineries.
Created in 2015 by this wine commission, the PSVA currently has 483 associate members, representing almost 11 thousand hectares of vineyards and 76 million litres of wine produced.
For the president of CVRA, Francisco Mateus, this distinction is a source of pride and “is further proof” that the sustainability program has placed Alentejo Wines “in the mouths of the world” and transported them “beyond borders”.
The PSVA “is making a notable difference in the region, but also in changing mentalities across the country, being at the level of the most important global initiatives for sustainable production”, underlined the official.
