The most recent data from Eurostat shows that in 2021, 90% of people aged between 16 and 74 used the internet in European Union (EU), of which 74% made online purchases. Portugal is well below the EU average (62%).
“Online purchases increased by one percentage point (p.p.) compared to 2020 (73% of users) and 11 p.p. compared to 2016 (63%)”, says the European statistics office. In the case of Portugal, in 2021, growth was 19% compared to 2016 and 6% compared to 2020.
It is in the Netherlands and Denmark that the most purchases are made online, with 94% and 92%, respectively. The podium is complete with Sweden (89%). In the opposite direction are, in this order, Bulgaria (42%) and Romania (44%).
Just to be sure. I assume "shopped online" here means that a purchase, so a payment has taken place. From there on I am confused by this article.
In 2021 obviously 74% of the eu-adults made online purchaseS. Were 62% of the portugese did. But what are purchaseS ? Did 74% and 62% made at least 1 online purchase ? Is a purchase related to 1 article ? Or to 1 total financial transaction ? One article is ofcourse the minimum so the average number of articles per "shopping" will be much higher.
Many people order ie 3 pair of shoes in 3 sizes and return 2 pairs. Very many people in the NL order online probably every week at least. Some youngsters even order a cup of coffee online which is then delivered by a flashcourier on an ebike or scooter.
I think the Number of orders per person per year (in the nl and pt) differs at least a factor 25. To my opinion the "noopppy" is a far better unit to compare countries (inhabitants) concerning there digital level.

What's the point of online shopping in Portugal if banks charge for paying online and the postal service does not work? Little wonder that Portugal continues so backwards.
