The most recent data from Eurostat shows that in 2021, 90% of people aged between 16 and 74 used the internet in European Union (EU), of which 74% made online purchases. Portugal is well below the EU average (62%).
“Online purchases increased by one percentage point (p.p.) compared to 2020 (73% of users) and 11 p.p. compared to 2016 (63%)”, says the European statistics office. In the case of Portugal, in 2021, growth was 19% compared to 2016 and 6% compared to 2020.
It is in the Netherlands and Denmark that the most purchases are made online, with 94% and 92%, respectively. The podium is complete with Sweden (89%). In the opposite direction are, in this order, Bulgaria (42%) and Romania (44%).
