According to the Portuguese Met Office, during the early hours of May 21st, local thermometers registered a rise of 10 degrees Celsius in 10 minutes.
Between 5.40am and 5.50am the IPMA’s stations in Beja registered a rise in temperatures from 22.9ºC to 33.4ºC.
Wind gusts of up to 53km/h were also registered.
It is alarming quite frequent in mainland Portugal during summer season due to its proximity to the Sahara, not a 'rare' occurence as IPMA puts it.
