A source from the Greater Lisbon Regional Sub-Command of Civil Protection told Lusa news agency that “in the last hour and a half, two hours” (between 08:30 and 10:30) there were around 25 incidents recorded due to heavy rainfall that caused flooding.

According to the same source, there were “many incidents in a short space of time, but without seriousness”, in the Lisbon and Oeiras area, mainly related to “clogged gutters” that lead to the formation of puddles of water, causing “some accidents”.

The Lisbon Firefighters told Lusa that they had recorded around a dozen incidents, most of which were flooding in homes and terraces, “due to a lack of maintenance due to blocked drains”.

“These were all occurrences that were easily resolved. The floods were also caused by roofs in poor condition, which caused leaks in the houses and also by clogged gutters,” said the source.

Six districts in the south of Portugal are today under a yellow warning due to the forecast of periods of sometimes heavy rain, reported the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon and Beja have been under a warning since 6 am, while in the districts of Portalegre and Évora the alert came into effect at 12 pm.

The yellow warning will be in effect in the six districts at least until 3 pm, due to "showers, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms", said the IPMA in a statement.
