300 tonnes of food were donated to the Food Bank (BA) Against Hunger in Porto during the Food Collection Campaign that took place over the weekend of May 28th and 29th.
The initiative was supported by 3,000 volunteers, who were distributed among the 314 super and hypermarkets in the Porto district. The volunteers were also responsible for the collection, separation, and storage of donated products in the warehouse of the Porto Food Bank in Perafita. Amongst the products most collected were donations of rice (73 tonnes), pasta (64 tonnes), milk (63 tonnes), canned vegetables (23 tonnes) and biscuits (17 tonnes), amongst other non-perishable foodstuffs.
For António Cândido da Silva, president of the BA, "During these difficult times the world is going through – which is directly reflected in the price of food and essential goods – these numbers show us, without a doubt, that the community maintains a spirit of solidarity and an enormous desire to help others".
"On behalf of the Food Bank of Porto, I would like to thank all those who, once again, responded to our appeal and who, through the donation of food or support through voluntary work, have allowed us to continue helping those most in need, especially in the times that we are unfortunately facing,” he added.
Would be even more constructive if Portugal ended its cult of poverty.
