The accident rate and road inspection report for 2021,
released by the ANSR, indicates that 22,765 drivers were fined for drinking too
much, 2,116 more than in 2020.
The document also states that last year 11,929 drivers were
arrested who were driving under the influence of alcohol, 2,509 more than in
2020.
“In terms of road crime, the total number of arrests in 2021
increased by 27.2% compared to 2020, reaching 25,300 drivers. In this context,
it appears that 47.1% of arrests resulted from driving under the influence of
alcohol, with an increase of 26.6% in these cases compared to the previous
year”, reads the report.
In addition to the fines for excessive alcohol, the
infraction that increased the most last year was the lack of mandatory periodic
inspection, which totalled 55,614 offences, an increase of 53.3% compared to
2020, when there were 36,268.
The ANSR also recorded increases in infractions for not
using child restraint systems (29.8%), for not using a seat belt (18.9%) and
for using a mobile phone (5.6%).
According to the report, the GNR inspected 6.7 million
vehicles, which represents a decrease of 1.4% compared to 2020, the PSP
inspected 3.8 million vehicles, which represents an increase of 4.4% and , in
turn, the SINCRO radar system, managed by ANSR, also recorded an increase of
6.0% compared to 2020, having inspected 110.5 million vehicles in 2021.
“Among the 122.4 million vehicles inspected in 2021, 1.1
million infractions were detected, which represents a decrease of 9.6% compared
to the previous year. This reduction is relevant as there was a 5.6% increase
in the number of inspected vehicles”, the report released also indicates.
Drinking and driving is criminal. Yet the Portuguese are unable to learn this and penalties are way too lenient. Animals have more sense than these criminals who act intentionally.
