Within the scope of Operation “Verão Seguro 2022”, the GNR
detected 46 infractions for the practice of illegal or irregular camping and caravanning
in a protected area and the respective owners have been identified.
“Illegal or irregular camping and caravanning in a protected
area can lead to excessive and disorderly occupation of public spaces and
coastal areas by motorhomes and the like, with negative consequences for the
landscape, the environment, land use planning and public health.
“The GNR will continue to raise awareness among campers to
adopt more responsible and environmentally friendly behaviour, especially in
these protected areas,” said a statement by the GNR.
Almost a given they were going to enforce the new laws this summer.

In any other country motor homes and camper vans are welcome, because the city councils create an infrastructure, bathrooms, toilet disposals, bathrooms, bins (that get emptied regularly), signs, tolerated areas where you pay a small overnight fee, bbq areas, camp sites, park rangers. Easy! Everyone happy, local population as well as holidaying travellers. Now there's the opposite, a witch hunt, where vigilante and now GNR go out at night harassing tourists. THIS is how something so easy and innocent turns into irritation with the local population and now into fines. Nice one Portugal! Meanwhile filling your pockets of tourism but no facilities. Even the life guarding on your beaches are to laugh about, with poor equipment, illegal working hours, low pay paid by private businesses. Wake up and make your country shine by making these essential changes. This current policy is really childish behaviour, grow up.

Agreed Olli. We did some camping around New Zealand a few years ago. Not a `rich´country by any means, but it wipes the floor with Portugal in terms of Infrastructure and cleanliness. Didn´t see so much as a single fag-end on the floor in over three weeks.

Well gosh Olli, if you love it that much, why stay? Here, I will show you the door. I love Portugal, and have no issue with how it is....I accepted for better or worse when I made the choice, yes a choice, when I made Portugal my home. Make your own choice.

Well said Bruce. Most of Portugal is still great for wild camping without restrictions, unlike here in England, where it's almost impossible.

@Ollie B don't blame the messenger. Do you really think those agents or their commander wanted to be there?! Blame the effing lobbyists, namely the hotel and restaurant association for the draconian laws regarding caravans.

It is a pity that the police can not or will not enforce the speed limits in the villages.

Try motorhoming in England. Easily £20 per night AND only if you belong to the caravan & motorhome club or similar. There are plenty of pla es to stsy free in Portugal just perhaps not kn the Algarve areas. Here in the centre we ha e a goodly amount of either free or very reasonably priced sites.
