According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the alert was received at 10:30pm, through the District Command of Rescue Operations (CDOS) of Coimbra, which reported the presence of a body floating at the Bacalhoeiros Dock, in Figueira da Foz, Coimbra’s district.

The AMN said that "elements of the Figueira da Foz Local Maritime Police Command, elements of the Figueira da Foz Rescue Station, elements of the Figueira da Foz Voluntary Fire Brigade and the INEM (National Medical Emergency Institute) went immediately to the place".

According to AMN, the Life-Saving Station crew proceeded to collect the body to the Figueira da Foz Life-Saving Station facilities and waited for elements of the INEM who performed resuscitation manoeuvres but "were unable to reverse the situation".

Therefore, the death was declared on the spot by the INEM doctor, he added.

The body of the 53-year-old man was taken by the Bombeiros of Figueira da Foz to the Institute for Forensic Medicine in Coimbra, after referral by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
