“The tourist accommodation sector registered 3.4 million
guests and 9.9 million overnight stays in August 2022, the highest monthly
values since recorded, corresponding to variations of 33% and 31.9%,
respectively (+ 85.4% and +90.0% in July, in the same order)”, according to the
National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Compared to August 2019, before the pandemic and, so far,
the best national tourist year, guests grew by 1.2% and overnight stays
increased by 2.8%.
In turn, the average income per available room (RevPAR)
stood at 102.2 euros and the average income per occupied room (ADR) reached
137.2 euros, the highest values since of 41.8% and 17.8% compared to August
2021.
Compared to August 2019, RevPAR is up 21.1% and ADR is up
18.1%.
In the month under analysis, among the municipalities with
the greatest representation in the national total of tourist activity, Lisbon
and Albufeira stood out, which, as a whole, concentrated 27.1% of the total
overnight stays in the country and 32.9% of the total overnight stays of
non-residents.
The net bed occupancy rate (68.3%) increased by 10.6
percentage points in August (+24.6 percentage points in July), slightly below
the 68.7% recorded in August 2019.
Revenue increase
As for total income, there was an increase of 53.6%, to 797
million euros, while revenue from accommodation reached 639 million euros,
reflecting a growth of 54.9%.
Compared to August 2019, there were increases of 24.9% and
25.7% in total revenue and accommodation, respectively.
In the first eight months of 2022, considering most types of
accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps
and youth hostels), there were 19.4 million guests and 52.8 million overnight
stays, which reflect increases of 122% and 121.6%, respectively.
Compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays
decreased by 3% (+4.4% in residents and -6.9% in non-residents).
