Cais do Sodré, in the city of Lisbon, is considered the second
coolest neighbourhood in the world, according to the annual ranking released by
Time Out magazine.
The list is made up of 51 neighbourhoods spread across
several continents, with the first place on the podium being reserved for the
Colonia Americana neighbourhood, in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico. The bronze
medal belongs to Wat Bo Village in Cambodia.
In the top 5 of the 'coolest' neighbourhoods in the world we
also find Ridgewood, in New York (in 4th place), and Mile End (5th), in
Montreal, Canada. The sixth position is occupied by the Logan District, in San
Diego, also in the USA, followed by Shimokitazawa, in Tokyo, Japan. In eighth
place is Cliftonville, in Margate, United Kingdom, and in ninth place, Yungay,
in Santiago, Chile. In 10th position is Cours Julien, in Marseille, France.
“Local authorities around the world are re-establishing
their neighbourhoods as places for people. In some cases, this means revamping
the street space: fewer cars, more space for walking, biking and walking. In
others, it means tackling problems such as over-tourism, inequality and air pollution”.
