According to SAPO, Correio da Manhã reported that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was not in Belém at the time, received an anonymous letter with a bullet inside, a mobile phone and a request for one million euros that should be sent to a bank account whose details were written in the letter.
In statements to CMTV, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa downplayed the situation, stressing that he received more "threats" when he had a TV show on RTP and TVI than in Belém.
"Who walks in this life and I've been walking for 30 years has this by the dozens. It happens and I don't give it much importance", he said.
The President of the Republic said that this type of situation happens sporadically, never having confirmed any seriousness.
"This happens sporadically and no serious situation has ever been confirmed. Normally there is a disturbance or it is not even possible to investigate what it is about because they are anonymous letters and, therefore, because I was out, the services decided to communicate this to the Judiciary Police", he said.
