Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa started his discourse by explaining the world’s environment, and mentioning the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As well as the political situation being lived in the United States of America. In his words, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted that the European Union must remain strong.

The President of the Republic also recalled the economic situation of Portugal, where unemployment decreased, and the financial status of the country grew.

After mentioning the Moções de Censura and the Moção de Confiança, that made the Government to cease, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa revealed that the new election will happen on 18 May 2025. The date was chosen by the political parties after the individual meeting of each party’s leader.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has also mentioned that the Council of State did not “desire” for new elections, but were respecting the decision of the Parliament. In his speech, the President of the Republic has also asked for a “clear political debate” during the electoral campaign.
