In these elections, the socialists were the winners, with eight Members of the European Parliament (MEP) from Partido Socialista (PS)being elected, including former health minister Marta Temido, who was the main candidate of PS for these elections, and the first woman to win elections in Portugal.

Partido Social Democrata (PSD) and Centro Democrático Social (CDS) joined once again for these elections, in the coalition Aliança Democrática (AD). However, besides being the victorious coalition in the legislative elections, AD stayed in second place, electing seven MEPs. The coalition had the second most votes with 31.1 percent of the votes, one percent less than PS.

Chega remains the third political force in Portugal, however lost several votes, when compared to March’s elections. The extreme right-wing party had 9.79 percent of the votes, totalling more than 300,000 votes, when in the legislative election, more than a million Portuguese citizens voted for Chega. Nevertheless, Chega will have two deputies in Brussels, marking their presence in the European Parliament for the first time.

Iniciativa Liberal (IL) elected two MEPs, having 9.07 percent of the votes. On the other hand, Bloco de Esquerda (BE) lost a deputy, who was elected in the 2019 European elections. Catarina Martins was the only candidate elected by the leftist party. Coligação Democrática Unitária (CDU) has also elected only one MEP, João Oliveira will represent the Portuguese Communist Party in the European Parliament.

Livre did not elect any MEP, although the party achieved 3.76 percent of the votes, being close to electing the main candidate Francisco Paupério. Pessoas Animais e Natureza (PAN) did not elect any MEP as well, losing votes in the 2019 European election, when a MEP was elected. PAN went from having 5 percent of the votes to being voted by less than 2 percent of the voters.

Alternativa Democrática Nacional (ADN) was once again a surprise of these elections, surpassing PAN, registering 1,37 percent of the votes.

As usual, not many Portuguese citizens went to the polls for European elections. Out of all the voters, only 36.52 percent of the population voted, meaning that less than four million citizens helped decide who would be representing Portugal at the European Parliament.

European groups

The 21 elected MEP´s in Portugal, will join the MEPs elected in other European Union countries, occupying places in diverse groups, according to their political ideology.

It is now known that the right-wing is the winner of the 2024 European elections. The Group of the Europeans People’s Party (Christian Democrats) (EPP) has elected, until now, 186 MEPs. This group is the group that PSD integrates. On the other hand, the Group of The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D), has 135 elected MEPs, eight of them are part of PS, elected in Portugal.
