According to a statement from the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity, and Social Security, "the number of unemployed registered in the IEFP [Institute of Employment and Vocational Training] in January (322,087 people) was the second lowest January in the last 30 years, decreasing by 9.5 percent (-33,782 people) compared to January 2022".
However, compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed increased by 4.9 percent, representing an increase of 15,082 people.
Youth unemployment in January also recorded the second lowest figure in that month since it was recorded, with a decrease of 6.4 percent (-2,421 young people), compared to January 2022.
In the first month of this year, according to the Government, there were 35,397 young people in unemployment and the share of youth unemployment (11 percent) compared to total unemployment remained in line with that recorded in the same month (10.6 percent).
As for long-term unemployment, there was a decrease of 29 percent compared to January 2022 (-50,477 people).
Similarly, the share of long-term unemployment (38.5 percent) compared to total unemployment also fell, compared to the same month (49 percent).
In January, 123,864 people were unemployed, an increase of 1.8 percent compared to the previous month (+321 people).
By regions, there were decreases in homologous terms throughout the country, except in Alentejo, with emphasis on the reduction of 12.5% in the Lisbon region.
At a sectoral level, in year-on-year terms, there were decreases in the Secondary (-8.6 percent) and Tertiary (-9 percent) sectors and an increase in the Agricultural sector (+2.3 percent).
