Last year Britain registered a net migration rate of 606,000, with 1.2 million immigrants entering the country, thanks largely to work visas offered to compensate for labour shortages in agriculture and healthcare.

This puts the UK extremely close to France in population, which in 2021 was only 700,000 people ahead, at 67,710,000. The UK is poised to overtake France in 2025.
