This programme aims to cut down on the 330,000 tonnes of edible food from farms that each year don't make it to the market through funding charities, who often don't have the resources to collect these products on a large scale. Under the government scheme, food distribution organisations will be able to apply for grants starting from £20,000, which can be used for the purchase of equipment, transport, and training for staff.
The fund was first proposed in 2018 and has finally been accepted after an open letter to the government by a group of hundreds of charity organisations called for its revival.
