In a statement, SEF states that residence permits that expire in the subsequent quarter can be automatically renewed without the need to go to a service desk in person, simply by accessing the “personal area” of the SEF portal in “automatic renewal”.
According to SEF, this modality has existed since July 2020 and around 300 thousand automatic renewals have already been carried out.
SEF specifies that the functionality is available for the period until September 30, 2023, with an estimated universe of 84 thousand foreign citizens, already residents, as possible beneficiaries.

As far as I know this is no longer the case. Yes in 2020 it could be done but I tried just last week and it told me the option was not available. Also there's a video https://youtu.be/zvFLkTyGs3c that tells you all the people who or not eligible for automatic renewal from 2022.

The option to renew online exists as a possibility for this quarter but so far we have been unsuccessful in the system allowing us to access the renewal web pages. I think it is hit or miss given the volume of renewals.

I just renewed mine on line last Friday. Was due for renewal September. Had to wait till three months from renewal date before it would except my on line renewal. Before that time was denied.

I was trying many times for automatic renewal but unfortunately there was a error shown in display and said contact to sef helpline number. This happens same in 2020 also. I was trying to contact sef helpline number but it's always busy.

I cannot renew my card because there is a bug on website, and my situation is very bad because I have 2 different residence card before , one is student visa one is golden visa I really need help to get out of this trouble, at present on the web I cannot push any button there. I just want to renew my card, but the phone nobody on,the email nobody reply, I dont even know what to do ,even my lawer didn't know what to do
