“In this period [between January and October], total income reached 5.4 billion euros and those related to accommodation amounted to 4.2 billion euros, values that were already above the annual total for 2022 and which reflect the evolution of demand and prices for services provided”, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Until October the number of guests increased by 13.7% to 26.3 million and overnight stays by 11.0%, to 68.5 million, while the average stay fell by 2.4%, to 2.60 nights.
Among residents in Portugal, the number of guests rose 5.0%, to 10.1 million and overnight stays rose 1.6%, to 20.46 million, while the average stay of residents in Portugal fell 3.3%, to 2 .02 nights.
The number of guests residing abroad also increased, by around 20.0% until October, to 16.24 million, similar to the number of overnight stays by foreign citizens (15.6%, to 48.07 million). The average stay fell by 3.6%, to 2.96 nights.
According to INE, among the municipalities with the greatest representation in the national total of tourist activity, Albufeira stood out, with a share of 11.1% and which surpassed 2019 levels for the first time since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Area was the region that contributed most to overall income (34.3% of total income and 36.9% of income from accommodation), followed by the Algarve (24.3% and 22.3%) and by the North (17.0% and 17.8%).
