Fiona Coghlan, a former Ireland rugby player, received the Outstanding Contribution award.

Earlier this year, McCabe led her country's team to their first-ever international competition, the World Cup in Australia, and New Zealand.

Her incredible goal from a corner kick against Canada made history as the first Irish player to score in a World Cup. She was also nominated for goal of the tournament.

The Girls in Green had a tough World Cup campaign, losing in the group stages. However, they have recovered remarkably, leading to a current winning run in the UEFA Nations League led by McCabe.

It looks like McCabe and her teammates are ushering in a new era of the game in Ireland under the direction of recently recruited Republic of Ireland manager Eileen Gleeson.

The 28-year-old Tallaght native, nevertheless, has also made an impression on her team; earlier this year, Arsenal awarded her Player of the Season.

It makes sense, too. In addition to being selected for the Champions League squad of the season and winning the Women's Super League Goal of the Year award for her goal against Manchester City, she made history by being the first Irish player to be nominated for the Women's Ballon d'Or.

McCabe's sister Vanessa collected the prize from Minister for Sport Catherin Martin on her behalf as she was unable to attend the awards event on Friday at the Shelbourne Hotel.

During the event, Katie reflected on her “special year” in a video message that was broadcast.

“I want to thank all the staff members who have supported me along the journey, as well as my teammates for club and nation. Without them, I wouldn't be here.

“I also want to express my gratitude to The Irish Times for choosing me as this year's winner. This one truly means a lot since it's an amazing pleasure to be even listed amongst so many great Irish sportswomen.”
