"It was a very positive year for the country's tourism, and also for Portugal as a whole, a record year in tourism, the best year in the history of tourism in Portugal", said the Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services, Nuno Fazenda, during a public session of Turismo de Portugal, in Lisbon.
The government official highlighted the records achieved in the various tourism demand indicators in 2023, with more than 30 million guests, a growth of around 10 percent compared to 2019, which had previously been the best tourist year, with 77 million overnight stays and revenue in the order of €25 billion, a growth of 37 percent compared to 2019 and 18.5 percent compared to 2022.
Nuno Fazenda also highlighted the growth in all regions of the country, throughout the year. "We are talking about a structural change in our tourism", he highlighted.
The Secretary of State said he believes that tourism will grow "even more in 2024", pointing to confidence in companies and workers in the sector, as well as in public policies for tourism.
Beer, beach and all day breakfast! Who says Portuguese culture is not dead. Btw, where does all that revenue go? Crumbling infrastructure and still no new hospital in Algarve, while passing out R&R funds to private business under the guise of investments in “tourism”! Seems like lithium mining and hydrogen projects are not the only things that need investigating.

I seem to recall that, at the end of the pandemic, there was a realisation that Portugal was too dependent on tourism.
Instead of signs of diversification, all I see is celebrations of record tourist figures.
When will they ever learn?
