In a joint statement, the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) indicate that between Tuesday and Sunday, 2,034 accidents were recorded, resulting in eight deaths, 35 serious injuries and 573 minor injuries
Compared to the same period in 2023, there were 67 fewer accidents, three more fatalities, seven fewer serious injuries and three more minor injuries.
The eight fatal victims, all male, were aged between 23 and 67, and the accidents occurred in the districts of Braga, Porto, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon and Beja.
During the period of the campaign, between Friday and Sunday, the Moto GP Portugal event took place at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, with the GNR predicting a significant increase in the volume of motorcycle traffic on the main access roads to the Algarve.
The campaign aimed to alert drivers, particularly those with two motor wheels, to drive safely, complying with the rules of the Highway Code and avoiding risky behaviour, such as: driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and incorrect use of safety devices.
During Security forces operations, 3.4 million vehicles were monitored using radar speed control, 3.3 million of which were monitored by SINCRO – National Speed Control System, under the responsibility of ANSR.
