“This is a cultural and recreational program for the centenary of Portimão, structured and very comprehensive, extending beyond the celebrations”, highlighted the mayor of Portimão, Isilda Gomes during the presentation of the artistic program.
The mayor of the municipality announced the aim of the program is “to be inclusive, making origins known, revisiting the history and reflecting on the future of the municipality”, in the district of Faro.
“We want people to get involved, discover their land and feel like they belong to history”, she added.
Isilda Gomes shared the diverse set of events “have the participation of the local associative movement, designed for families and to make people aware and experience the municipality over time”.
“I think this is the time to meet, with the participation and contribution of the entire population”, she considered.
In terms of the artistic initiatives, developed by the cooperative Lavrar os Mar, the organisers highlight the musical laboratories, between May and December, which “seek to stimulate the artistic creation of amateur and professional musicians in the municipality”.
On May 3, a new circus show (street theatre) will be presented at the riverside area, at 7pm, and from June 1 to June 2, there will be a dance initiative with the circus, in the same location, at 7.30pm.
The month of June will be dedicated to popular marches which are themed “100 years of the city”, with the participation of local communities.
The new circus and street theatre will return to the city’s riverside area, between July 18 and July 20, with “Arrête d’urgence” by the French from Akoreacro, and the Art and Light Festival “A Night Out”.
In August, the traditional Sardine Festival will be included in the municipality’s centenary entertainment program, for the first time this year.
Marionette, doll and puppet shows have been scheduled from November 6 to November 21, which will be presented in various locations of the municipality.
The municipal theatre (TEMPO) will host a dance by Miquelina and Miguel, on October 1, at 7pm, and the culinary theatre play “Who Goes to the Sea Does not Return”, from October 3 to October 6, at 7.30pm.
The Centenary Gala will occur on November 2, and will feature the fado singer Carminho, at the municipal theatre. From the November program there will also be the launch of the publication “Archaeological interventions in the historic center of Portimão”, at the municipal museum.
From November 28 to November 29, the culinary experience “Encatation” will be presented at the Portimão Arena, at 7.30pm.
The new circus will return to Portimão for the last time in 2024, between December 7 and December 8, with their show “Terces”.
Among the initiatives scheduled until the end 2024 are exhibitions on the history of Portimão, concerts with national aritists, the public presentation of the Plano Estratégico Cultura Portimão and the inauguration of the commemorative stamp “Portimão – 100 anos de cidade”.
