According to records from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, the alert for a landslide in the Union of Parishes of Sintra occurred at 07:48.
“It’s a house in relatively good condition, whose wall collapsed onto the public road”, explained to Lusa the vice-president of the municipality, Bruno Parreira (PS), adding that “there is no record of injuries, only material damage to the public space ”.
The person responsible for the Municipal Civil Protection Service admitted that, at the origin of the fall of the wall, there could be “the issue of heavy land due to the accumulation of rainwater”, but the municipality confirmed that “the owner had already been notified to proceed to repair the wall.”
The wall, at number 23 Consiglieri Pedroso, belongs to a property where the Palácio de Sintra Boutique House hotel operates.
The mass of earth and the remains of the wall completely cut off the narrow street in the historic center, next to Lawrence's Hotel, considered the oldest hotel in the Iberian Peninsula, and Bruno Parreira said that cleaning operations are underway to clean the road, “ which will be closed to traffic in the first phase and for pedestrian access only”.
“The land is at a significant height, in relation to the road, and we are working to ensure there is no risk”, highlighted the mayor, pointing out the need, after the cleaning and removal phase, to stabilise the embankment.
“Some form of mechanical containment will be applied, but primary, basic, and provisional, and then, in a second phase, a complete intervention will be carried out by the owner, who has the obligation to repair the wall there”, he stressed.
For Bruno Parreira, “the most important thing is for the owner to carry out the work to rebuild the wall”.
Regarding the reopening of that section of the access road to the historic center, the municipal head of Civil Protection reiterated that “for car traffic, certainly not” for now and, “from a pedestrian point of view, probably only tomorrow [Tuesday] or later".
