The service is free and covers the 11 parishes and parish unions of the municipality, in the district of Lisbon.

SMAS reports that since Electrão (waste manager) started the door-to-door household appliance collection project in 2021, a total of more than 780 tons of broken or unused electrical equipment have been sent for recycling in Greater Lisbon.

“To request this home collection, you must have a bulky appliance for delivery, such as a refrigerator, freezer or washing machine or dryer,” says SMAS, adding that at the time of collection the team may take batteries, used batteries and small electrical equipment that is broken or out of use.

As part of the project, a partnership between the municipality and Electrão, equipment that is still working is also highlighted and is later delivered to institutions, promoting reuse.

The initiative aims to combat the parallel market, since many of the household appliances that are placed on public roads are picked up before the waste collection vehicle arrives, and to prevent the accumulation of electrical equipment.

Applications to join the service must be sent to the Parish Council/Union of Parishes or SMAS in Sintra (https://www.smas-sintra.pt/residuos/rede-de-recolha-de-residuos-urbanos/eletrodomesticos-volumosos/ ).
