The 90 flats purchased in Vila do Conde municipality's southern region in the district of Porto will be rented at limited costs to families in need, the City Council has announced. The housing project, which will consist of T2, T3, and T4 apartments and has a cost of €15.2 million covered by European funds from the PRR [Recovery and Resilience Plan], aims to be completed by March 2026.
To be constructed in the Mosteiró parish, adjacent to Estrada Nacional 13, the housing complex will have seven two-story buildings with a total of twelve apartments each, as well as a smaller block with only six flats. Vítor Costa, the president of Vila do Conde municipality, clarified that the Chamber will be the owner of the homes and will rent them out to families from the parishes of Mindelo, Fajozes, Vila Chã, Modivas, Labruge, Vilar/Mosteiró, Aveleda, and Vilar do Pinheiro, at controlled costs.
As Vítor Costa explained, “It is good news for Vila do Conde, and especially for families in need who suffer serious housing problems. The contract for the acquisition of these 90 homes was signed last week and the construction, which will now begin, must be completed by March 2026”. Moreover, the City Council will proceed with the extensive renovation of 600 homes that are a part of its housing stock, as per this habitation plan.
In addition to the 48 apartments that were previously built using €2.5 million in municipal funds, the mayor recalled that the Local Housing Strategy aims to construct, acquire, and renovate more than 600 homes in the municipality. Vítor Costa also announced that applications submitted to the PRR included an additional 46 apartments in Touguinha and six in Bairro do Farol, in Vila do Conde. These apartments are now the subject of an application to cover this investment.
As the mayor defends, the Chamber will be able to address "the need to remodel old homes and the lack of homes for families with financial difficulties" with the implementation of these measures.
