The majority of Portuguese people stop working when they start receiving their pension, but there are some who decide to stay in work, either due to financial necessity or the desire to continue being productive. According to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), one in ten Portuguese people continues to work even after retirement.
In total, last year, there were 1.1 million people receiving an old-age pension in Portugal, of which 57.5% indicated that they had stopped working when they received their first pension.
However, 13.2% continued to work, “mainly due to financial needs (46.5%), the desire to continue being productive (30.8%) and the need to remain socially integrated (10.9%)”.
